Drafting in of schoolchildren for functions criticised

Staff Correspondent

Central rule beyond six months disfavoured

Petition to be given to Governor on pending projects

HASSAN: The former Minister B. Shivaram has said that although it is not necessary to deploy schoolchildren during the arrival of a guest or VIP for functions, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction had organised a function in Holenarsipur last week, where the children were made to wait for two hours for the dignitaries to arrive.

Two days ago, a similar function was organised at Sakleshpur, where schoolchildren were drafted in to invite the guests, he said. The function was presided over by the former MLA H.M. Vishwanath. On Friday, schoolchildren had to wait for a long time at a bank inaugural function, he alleged.

President’s Rule

Mr. Shivaram said President’s Rule should not be in force for more than six months.

Referring to reports in a section of the press, he said there was no move to get the Governor replaced and charged the Bharatiya Janata Party with indulging in propaganda.

He said Congress leaders had discussed the pending irrigation projects in the district at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee meeting in Bangalore on Friday, and added that they would submit a representation to the Governor seeking funds for them in the budget.

The Dharam Singh government had sanctioned lift irrigation schemes in the district that were to irrigate 1.24 lakh acres of agricultural land.

Narrow focus

Mr. Shivaram charged the former Minister H.D. Revanna with having concentrated only on the development of roads, and said that he did not work for the welfare of farmers of the district.

Krishna’s comeback

He said Maharashtra Governor S.M. Krishna would resign by March and return to State politics.

He could even be made Union Minister and put in overall charge of Karnataka, Mr. Shivaram added. S.M. Anand, MLC, was present on the occasion.
