Congress candidate to become CMC president

Staff Correspondent

The post of president is reserved for SC (woman) category

BIDAR: Congress councillor Rita Fernandes is set to become the first woman from the Scheduled Castes (SC) category to hold the post of president of the Bidar City Municipal Council (CMC). Ms. Fernandes represents Ward 15..

The post of president is reserved for SC category (woman) and Ms. Fernandes is the only woman from the SC category in the council. The post of vice-president is reserved for Backward Classes (B) category. Elections for both the posts will be held on Monday. The nominations were received at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Saturday.

None of the three major political parties — the Janata Dal (S), BJP and Congress — have a clear majority in the CMC. The Janata Dal (S) with 16 members is the single largest party in the House, but cannot stake claim to the post as it does not have any SC women member in the council.

The Congress has 11 members and the BJP seven, and there is one independent member in the 35-member council.

In addition, the Congress has Narsingrao Suryavanshi, MP, and Arshed Ali and Ratna V. Kushnoor, MLCs, taking their total to 14.

Ms. Fernandes filed her nomination on Saturday. The fight for the post of vice-president will now be between the Janata Dal (S) and the BJP. However, the Congress and the BJP are keen to keep the Janata Dal (S) out of power in the council.
