‘Rule of law important in democratic setup’

Correspondent

CHIKMAGALUR: V. Gopal Gowda, judge of the Karnataka High Court and Executive President of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, said here on Saturday that the rule of law was important in a democratic setup.

Inaugurating a legal workshop for school teachers and junior college lecturers organised jointly by the District Legal Services Authority, Bar Association and the Department of Information, Mr. Gopal Gowda said the unity and integrity of the country would be undermined if the rule of law was not adhered to.

Calling upon lawyers to ensure that the rule of law was upheld, he said lawyers should come to the aid of those in difficulties. Describing lawyers as the guardians of the Constitution, he urged them to propagate legal literacy. Stating that lawyers were the architects of society, he said they should go to the villages and ensure that human rights were not violated.

Commending teachers for their role in the country’s independence movement, he said they had an important role to play in shaping the future of the country. He appealed to teachers to learn the salient features of the law and impart them to their students.

Ashok B. Hinchigeri, judge of the Karnataka High Court, presided over the function. K. Sundar Naik, Chief Executive Officer of the Chikmagalur Zilla Panchayat; T.M. Krishnamurthy, Bar Association president; and Mante Lingachar, Deputy Director of Public Instruction, were present.

Prakash Bellary, Principal District and Sessions Judge, welcomed. H.B. Ravindranath, civil judge and member secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, proposed a vote of thanks.
