17,000 acres of land can be irrigated ‘BJP will resist any move to postpone polls’ SORAB (SHIMOGA DISTRICT): Former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said here on Friday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was committed to implementing the Dandavati Irrigation Project if it was voted to power in the coming Assembly elections. Addressing a public meeting held as part of the Jana Jagruti Andolana he said though the project was hailed as a boon for Sorab taluk it was being stalled by prominent leaders of the taluk for their selfish political reasons. He said that nearly 17,000 acres of land in the taluk would benefit from the project and only four villages would be submerged. He promised that the BJP would provide compensation and rehabilitation to the families likely to be displaced by the project before the foundation stone for it was laid. Mr. Yeddyurappa said that people were the ultimate masters in a democratic setup. Sorab taluk remained backward for over 40 years as the representatives from the taluk showed hardly any interest for its development, he said. Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the Congress which was diffident to face the people was trying its best to get the elections postponed. He warned that the BJP would resist any move to postpone the elections. Clarifying that BJP was not opposed to the delimitation process, he said, “It is opposed to the postponement of the elections for the sake of delimitation of constituencies.” Party leaders such as former Shimoga MP Ayanur Manjunath, Hartalu Halappa, Basur Chandrappa Gowda and C.M. Udasi were present.
