Bellary
Charged up: Residents of various localities in Bellary taking out a procession on Saturday demanding better infrastructure. BELLARY: Life in Bellary city came to a standstill between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. as the city observed a complete bandh on Saturday. It was in response to a call given by the Bellary Nagarika Horata Samiti in protest against the poor condition of roads and the National Highway 63. The regular movement of heavy vehicles transporting iron ore has resulted in roads getting damaged. The protest was also meant to draw the attention of the authorities concerned to the plight of the people, who have been demanding action to prevent dust pollution by constructing a bypass. A procession was taken out in the thoroughfares of the city, in which residents from various localities and representatives of over 125 voluntary organisations including the Bellary District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Bellary Bar Association, the Socialist Unity Centre of India, the All-India Mahila Samskrutika Sanghatane, the Readymade Garment Manufacturers’ Association and the Ambedkar Sangha participated. They demanded construction of a bypass, repairs to roads, improvement in basic civic amenities and checking dust pollution.
