THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Central Library here has introduced an online book reservation and renewal system as part of its modernisation programme. Members can now log on to the library website www.statelibrary.kerala.gov.in to reserve and renew books. Even those without membership can use the facility to browse the rich collection of books in the library, says State Librarian P.Suprabha. Theft-proofChief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan is scheduled to inaugurate the new system at a function to be held on the library premises on February 21. He will also inaugurate the Radio Frequency Identification and Detection (RFID) system introduced in the children’s section. ‘Code reader’The technology uses the ‘code’ contained in an RFID tag to identify a book, mark an entry or detect theft. A check-in kiosk equipped with a ‘code reader’ has been installed in the children’s section. The modernisation project is being implemented by the IT Business Group of the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited and the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT). Ms.Suprabha said 707 rare books in the library’s collection had been digitised in the pilot phase of a project to set up a digital library. Collection of booksThe State Central Library boasts a collection of over 3.25 lakh books in English, Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Sanskrit. It also has 23 dailies and 170 journals.
