JAIPUR: The public sector power distribution companies in Rajasthan supplied 32.24 crore more units of electricity to farmers during January to protect their rabi crops against frost during the ongoing cold wave that has swept almost the entire State. A spokesperson of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam said here that though the State had purchased additional electricity from Chhattisgarh and the Adani group, the demand from agricultural consumers shot up last month because of cold wave. Besides purchasing 33.18 crore units of electricity, the State overdrew 27.08 crore units from the Northern Grid during January to maintain regular power supply and reduce power cuts to the minimum. The State received 300 MW power from the Adani group and had 25 lakh additional units available everyday with the Dholpur plant’s third unit having started production. Despite all the hiccups, the State has registered a record power supply to farmers during the rabi crop season by ensuring the availability of 11.05 crore units a day. The peak load touched the highest level of 5,556 MW during the season. Meanwhile, the Vidyut Prasaran Nigam and the three discoms have decided to recruit 4,230 new employees this year to fill up the posts of junior engineers, technical helpers, feeder managers and accounts officers.
