University conducted CAT last year Infrastructure to be readied for new courses KOCHI: The Syndicate meeting of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) held on Saturday decided to hold a common admission test (CAT) for admission to its various courses, including B.Tech., during the forthcoming academic year. In the previous year also the university conducted CAT for the admission. The Higher Education Secretary had issued an order last week that 50 per cent of the seats will be filled from the rank list of All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). The Secretary had also directed the university authorities to fill the remaining seats through a CAT exclusively for Kerala students. The proposal to select 50 per cent of students from the AIEEE rank list was made on the basis that Cusat would be converted into an Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology. When the matter came up for discussion at the syndicate meeting on Saturday, serious differences cropped up between its members. The Vice-Chancellor Gangan Prathap used his discretionary powers o decide that the admission would be made on the basis of CAT. It is reliably learned that this decision was taken to ensure reservation norms and representation of students from the State in various programmes offered by the university. The university authorities also feared that the proposal to admit 50 per cent students from the AIEEE rank list would invite legal problems. The meeting chaired by the Vice-Chancellor decided to permit centres for CAT in selected cities across the country. The meeting entrusted the Vice-Chancellor with the responsibility of readying infrastructure facilities required for launching B.Tech. courses in aerospace engineering and aircraft manufacturing and maintenance engineering and M.Sc. in Nanotechnology. The courses would be launched by the next academic year as when the infrastructure is in place.
