NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Saturday said that even though there was an increase in the population of Delhi with people continuing to migrate from different States, they were all welcome to the Capital. At the Delhi Police Raising Day function here, Mr. Patil said Delhi’s population had been increasing rapidly. “It has gone up to about 1.4 crore and is growing fast. This has posed some problems,” he said, adding that a steep rise in vehicular population had resulted in traffic management problems. Traffic managementMr. Patil said the issue of traffic management should be taken up seriously especially in view of the Commonwealth Games in 2010. He said the police would have to prepare well in order to properly manage the inflow of people in large numbers during the grand event. He assured the force that their demands for accommodation, more manpower, police stations and districts were being processed. Mr. Patil emphasised the need for an increase in the number of women in the force and expressed hope that in the coming decade they would constitute 10 per cent of the manpower. “We want an increase in the number of women personnel in the police forces,” he said. Addressing the gathering, Delhi Police Commissioner Y. S. Dadwal said a Central Traffic Control Command was being developed to streamline traffic across the Capital, in view of the Commonwealth Games. He said a “cyber highway” connecting all police stations to the headquarters was also coming up and for that discussions were on with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited. Earlier, Mr. Patil inspected the Raising Day Parade comprising contingents of the Anti-Riot and Disaster Management Department, the Armed Police, the Mounted Police, the Special Weapons and Tactics Squad and the Dog Squad.
