Stage set for trial

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The stage is set for the commencement of trial in respect of five persons, including former Deputy Inspector-General of Police A.P. Mohammed Ali, in the multi-crore fake stamp paper case.

When the Special Court for CBI Cases took up the matter on Friday, two persons, Nizamuddin and Ramasamy Sadhu, were not present. Petitions seeking to dispense with their attendance were filed and allowed.

Special Judge N. Velu adjourned the matter to February 28. Marking the commencement of trial, he also issued summons to witnesses.

All the other accused, including Abdul Karim Telgi, pleaded guilty in the case and were sentenced up to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
