BANGALORE: The two factions of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) have sunk their differences and announced that they will work together for the welfare of the farming community in the State. The late M.D. Nanjundaswamy faction and K.S. Puttanniah faction, today, appeared jointly at a press conference for the first time since the merger and announced that they had “cemented their association” and will work together for the alleviation of farmers’ woes in the State. Mr. Puttanniah said said that the governments had failed to bring in an uniform farm policy in the country. Successive governments in Karnataka State had delivered “packages” which served no purpose. He said with the combined force, the KRRS will now launch the largest of struggles against the alleged anti-farmer policies of the Government, including the delay in fixing the uniform Statutory Minimum Price and support it with the ‘State Advisory Price’ for sugarcane and other agricultural produce like cotton, paddy, ragi and commercial crops. Executive president of the unified KRRS, Kodihalli Chandrashekar, said the KRRS has demanded a permanent ‘Krishi Vetana Ayoga’ (Farm wage commission) from the Government. Later a delegation of the KRRS met the adviser to the Governor of Karnataka S. Krishna Kumar, Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao and Finance Secretary Yogendra Tripathy and appealed to them to announce Rs. 200 recovery rate in addition to the Rs. 800 Statutory Minimum Price to sugarcane growers. Stir from Monday
The KRRS will begin a State-wide stir from February 18. This stir will be intensified into ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation. He warned that thousands of farmers in every district, taluk and hobli will join the stir, particularly in Bangalore.
