Managements fear flight of students

Kochi: The Kerala Self-financing Engineering College Managements’ Association said here on Saturday that failure of the fee regulatory committee to announce the fee structure before February 2 would lead to a crisis during admission time and an exodus of students to colleges outside the State.

In a statement, G.P.C. Nayar, president of the association, said the colleges had furnished the account details to the committee. The colleges were asked to do so on January 30, 2007. They gave the accounts on February 10 that year. The committee invited them for discussions on the basis of the accounts submitted on April 10. As the panel was not able to complete scrutiny of the accounts, a temporary fee of Rs. 38,700 was fixed and an order to that effect passed on May 16.

The committee, he said, later issued another order saying that the temporary fee was not applicable to colleges which had signed an agreement with the government for seat-sharing. The college managements got a notice from the committee on December 17, asking them to appear before it for deciding the fee structure. The panel had said that the fees would be announced before February 2. The managements had now been asked to furnish accounts up to January 31, 2008 and also the accounts of last three years and other details in seven days.
