THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bharatiya Janata Party State president P.K. Krishnadas said here on Saturday that the State government was trying to save Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem and corrupt elements in the HMT land deal. Demanding a CBI inquiry, he told a news conference that the sale of land allocated by the government to the public sector HMT Ltd. to a private company was the biggest land scam seen by the State. The Law Secretary, Ernakulam District Collector and an official committee headed by the Chief Secretary had recommended resumption of the land by the government after cancellation of the transfer of registry. However, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan had gone with the party decision to bury the deal to keep his position. The Cabinet decision to seek legal advice from the Advocate- General was intended to exonerate the Ministers and others involved in the deal. The Additional Advocate-General, who had admitted irregularities before the High Court, had been taken off the case. Mr. Krishanadas demanded that the government issue a White Paper on all land deals after it came to power. He said the Union and the State governments were responsible for the price rise. Hence, the United Democratic Front’s agitation over price rise was ridiculous. The increase in petrol prices hit a consumer State such as Kerala badly. Hence, the increase should be withdrawn at least in Kerala. The BJP would launch agitations over these issues. He said the Centre was trying to undermine reservation by including converts to other religions also in the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. SCs and STs were not getting reservation benefits in minority institutions. He said workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were behind the burning of a house in Venmani panchayat limits near Chengannur. The government or the CPI(M) should pay compensation to the house owner.
