Lawyers to boycott courts tomorrow

CHENNAI: Various advocates associations have called for boycott of court and tribunal proceedings in the State on February 18, demanding that the advocate welfare fund benefits to lawyers be increased from Rs.2 lakh to Rs.5 lakh.

A meeting of the general body of the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) unanimously took the decision. The office-bearerswill meet the Chief Minister and submit a memorandum.

The Tamil Nadu Advocates Association has called upon advocates to boycott proceedings on February 18, demanding implementation of its demands.

Association president S. Prabakaran wanted the Government to introduce a stipend scheme for law graduates. Under a scheme introduced by the Karnataka government in July last year, law graduates were eligible for a stipend of Rs.1,000 for 24 months from the date of their enrolment in the Bar.
