E. Ahamed tells the media to be fair and just in analyses. KOCHI: Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed said here on Saturday that the media had an important role to play as opinion makers. Speaking after inaugurating a media seminar on “History of Malayalam Journalism,” jointly organised by the Kerala History Association and the Ernakulam Press Club, Mr. Ahamed said the media had an important role to play as opinion makers. He said, “Media persons should fulfil the role of opinion makers through intellectual honesty and fair and just analysis.” The media had played a big role in creating a highly vigilant society in Kerala unlike in other States. He urged the media to stay away from sensationalism and excessive entertainment. Entertainment was needed, but it should not overshadow sensibility and knowledge. Mr. Ahamed released the diamond jubilee souvenir of the association by handing it over to P.N. Venugopal, Press Club secretary. V.R. Krishna Iyer, jurist and president of the association, presided over the meeting. Sebastian Paul, MP, participated. K.M. Roy, senior journalist, moderated the seminar. N.P. Rajendran, Assistant Editor, Mathrubhumi, presented a paper on the seminar topic. E.P. Antony, secretary of the association, welcomed the gathering. Mr. Venugopal proposed a vote of thanks. Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the seminar, Mr. Ahamed said detailed discussions with the Kuwait Interior Ministry regarding the employment of housemaids would be held shortly and the issue would be resolved as soon as possible. The discussions would revolve around Section 20 of the Kuwaiti labour laws. Mr. Ahamed had held discussions with the Kuwaiti Prime Minister, the External Affairs Minister, the Labour Minister and the Under Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry on the model labour contract during his visit there recently.
