MADURAI: Relief seems to be in sight for 26 youths from Tamil Nadu, who are suffering harsh working conditions at a private firm in Tripoli, Libya. In a communication to Rajya Sabha MP E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan, the Ministry of External Affairs has stated that the Indian Embassy had taken up the issue with the employer, who had agreed to send back the 26 youths to Tamil Nadu after settling their dues. Mr. Natchiappan had written to the Ministry seeking its urgent intervention in the issue. Enquiries made by the Indian Embassy revealed that the youths were unhappy with the terms and conditions of the contract and had expressed their desire to return home. They had resigned their jobs and were also willing to bear their return fare. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Libya, was also apprised of the matter. “I have been told by the Ministry that the youths will return to Tamil Nadu in a week. I took up the matter with the authorities concerned after their family members met me,” Mr. Natchiappan told The Hindu on Friday. The youths, mostly from Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts, were assured of decent jobs with attractive salary by an agent who sent them to Libya five months ago. However, on arrival, it was shocking for them as the working conditions were tough and the pay paltry. The family members of the youths staged a demonstration at the Collectorate here last week appealing to the State Government to help the youths return home.
