KOCHI: Garima Choudhary, one of the brightest prospects in the country, was forced to sweat for her women’s 63-kg gold in the senior National judo championship at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here on Saturday. International Garima was level with Jharkhand’s Rajwinder Kaur after the five-round bout. There was a new bout and Garima won by the golden score (koka). Another international, CRPF’s Commonwealth champion A. Anitha Chanu, came up with an impressive ‘ippon’ victory over Punjab’s Sajida for the women’s 52-kg gold. The results (finals): Men: 66kg: Arvind Kumar (BSF) bt Santosh Mane (ITBP) by ippon; Bronze: Sanju Singh (SSCB) & Parvinder Hooda (Railways). Women: 52kg: A. Anita Chanu (CRPF) bt Sajida (Punjab) by ippon; Bronze: N. Gomti Chanu (Assam) & S. Ibetombi (Jharkhand). 57kg: Aruna (Haryana) bt L. Nirupama Devi (CRPF) by ippon; Bronze: Gagandeep Kaur (Rajasathan) & Surekha Shirsat (Mah ‘B’). 63kg: Garima Choudhary (U.P.) bt Rajwinder Kaur (Jharkhand) by golden score; Bronze: Sangeeta Sharma (MP) & L. Brijeshwari Devi (CRPF). Narrow winTellicherry CC beat Priyadarshini by one wicket in the Euro Steel Kannur district ‘A’ division cricket league at Thalassery on Saturday. The scores: Priyadarshini 241 in 39.4 overs (Rayees 69, Vinith 47, Akshay Chandran four for 38, P.V. Sirajuddin four for 55) lost Tellicherry Cricket Club 242 for nine in 44.5 overs. Semifinalists spottedKunnamkulam, Kanipayor, Kozhikode and Kottayam made it to the semifinals of the inter-YMCA basketball tournament at Kunnamkulam on Saturday. The results (quarterfinals): Kunnamulam 52 (Amal James 10, Shinil John 10) bt Thiruvalla 32 (Sanu 13). Kanipayor 59 (Kiran M. Abic 23, Manoj 10) bt Fort Kochi 28 (Nithin 14, Aziz 10). Course concludesThe AFC ‘C’ licence course concluded in Thrissur on Wednesday. The two-week course was attended by 21 aspirants, including former internationals I.M. Vijayan and Joe Paul Ancheri. The course was conducted by AIFF’s director of coaching Gabriel Joseph and he was assisted by S. Gee Varghese. Computerised video of the practical classes was introduced for the first time in India and was appreciated by all the participants. This is the second time that AIFF is holding the ‘C’ license course in Kerala.
