Gopalpur Dhamra Ports to be completed by 2010

13 places across the 480 km coastline are identified for construction of ports

There has been no protest against the proposed Dhamra port, says the Commerce Minister

Bhubaneswar: Orissa Government today said construction of two ports would be completed by 2010, as part of the ambitious target for setting up 13 ports along State’s coastline.

The ports at Gopalpur and Dhamra would be operational by 2010, Transport and Commerce Minister Jayanarayan Mishra told the assembly.

The Government had identified 13 places across the 480 km coastline for construction of ports and in the first phase, the State had signed MoUs with Gopalpur Ports Ltd and Dhamara Port Company to set up ‘allweather’ ports at Gopalpur in Ganjam district and Dhamra in Bhadrak district, he said. Similarly an MoU was signed with Creative Port Development Private Limited for construction of a port at Kirtania in Balasore district. “The construction of the port at Kirtania will be completed within 48 months of alloting land for the purpose”, Mishra said.

Official sources said the first phase of Gopalpur Port was completed. “The port has started handling cargo from Gopalpur port”, an official said adding the detailed project report for the second phase of Gopalpur port was likely to be submitted by April next. Mishra claimed there was no protest against the proposed Dhamra port. Of 1011.94 acres of Government land required for the purpose, 879.10 acres had been acquired while 1906 acres of the total 2107.84 acres private land was taken over for Dhamara port.

The Minister said a total of 318 families would be facing displacement for setting up of Dhamara port. “A number of displaced families as well as project-affected persons have already been disbursed compensation”, he said. - PTI
