PERAMBALUR: The State Government has chalked out a plan envisaging an outlay of Rs.40 crore for the Minorities Economic Development Corporation during the next financial year, the Chairman of the Corporation, Xavier Arulraj said. Speaking at a consultative meeting convened here on Saturday to chalk out ways and means for economic development of minorities in the district, he said that till the eight years ended in 2006, only a sum of Rs.14 crore had been allotted to the economic uplift of the minorities. He said that the State Government had sanctioned six hostels to benefit students belonging to Minority community. Listing out the increased scale of finance introduced by the State Government, he said that the individual loan for taking up self-employment activities had been raised from Rs.10,000 to Rs.25,000. A total of 765 students had been sanctioned educational loans to the tune of Rs.2 crore. Educational assistance amounting to Rs.1,160 crore had been disbursed to students of Plus One and Plus Two courses besides primary-level pupils. Vocational training to 5,000 youths was being imparted for which adequate funds had been allotted. Farmers belonging to Minority communities would get a special subsidy equivalent to 50 per cent of the cost for setting up agricultural wells. The Ariyalur Collector, V.M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam, in his address, said that Rs.10 lakh had been disbursed out of Rs.2 crore allotted for sanctioning economic activity loans to the people belonging to minority community in Ariyalur and Perambalur districts. The Manager of the Corporation Riswan Ahamad was among those who spoke.
