BERHAMPUR: The road widening process at the NH-217, which passes through the city and repair of other roads inside the city has become a major traffic menace as the y process is taking a long time. Although the portions of NH-217 inside the city, which are under repair and renovation pass through busiest areas of the city, the authorities prefer to do the work during the peak hour of the traffic. The stretch of NH 217 between State Bank Square and Gate Bazar is under widening process since more than a week. Long ditches have been dug up on the side of the road. Heavy machines continue to work from 10 a.m. till evening at this spot choking up the flow of traffic. The problem aggravates as a portion of the NH near Gate bazar is used as garbage dump by the city municipality and a road side vegetable market exists in the area. At times it takes more than 30 minutes to cross this stretch of road. The irony is that through this elongated road work during peak traffic hours the authorities are also causing problem for the patients of the city hospital located by the side of the road. Most sufferers of this traffic jam feel like other urban areas, the authorities could have persuaded the contractors to take up road widening work at night when the traffic flow is low and the work should get finished as fast as possible. A 450 meter stretch of road near SBI square had taken more than four months to get completed during last year. The ditch between two newly constructed roads took more than a year to get filled up. The practice of creating traffic problem by taking up repair works during peak traffic hours still continues in the city to save extra expense on labour and light.
