BERHAMPUR: The house surgeons of four government homeopathy colleges in Orissa have started agitation demanding hike of their monthly allowance and their regular appointments by the State Government.

The house surgeons of Biju Patnaik Homeopathy College in the city staged dharna in front of their institution on Saturday. Similar protests have also started at other three homeopathy colleges in Bhubaneswar, Rourkela and Sambalpur.

They are demanding their monthly allowance to be increased to Rs. 5,000 per month. Recently the State Government has increased the allowance of house surgeons of three government medical colleges in the State to Rs. 5,000.

This decision was taken following agitation by the house surgeons of three medical colleges.

Earlier the house surgeons of medical colleges were getting Rs. 2,850 as their monthly allowance.

The house surgeons of government homeopathy and Ayurveda colleges were being paid Rs. 21.50 per month as allowance.

Sitakanta Kar, the president of the students’ union of the Biju Patnaik homeopathy college said the State Government is also not making regular appointment of homeopathy doctors.

Since last 10 years no new appointments of homeopathy doctors have been made in the State.

The agitating homeopathy students have threatened to start hunger strike if the State Government did not heed to their demands within February 20. Mr. Kar alleged that the State Government is not promoting homeopathy although it can provide affordable health service to the poor of the State.

The students of Government ayurveda colleges in the State are also demanding the allowance of their house surgeons to be increased to Rs. 5,000.
