BHUBANESWAR: While all the action pertaining to naxal attacks and the counter operation of the police was going on in Nayagarh and adjoining districts, it had its “louder” echo in the State Assembly here on Saturday. Opposition members disrupted proceedings and shouted anti-government slogans during budget presentation demanding resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. They blamed the Naveen Patnaik-led Government for ‘utterly failing’ to protect life and property of people. The day started in a dramatic fashion with Leader of Opposition J. B. Patnaik moving a condolence motion that is usually done by Chief Minister, who is the Leader of House. While members of the opposition stood up and maintained a minute’s silence in memory of those killed in the Maoist attack, the treasury bench members decided to wait for the return of the Chief Minister from Nayagarh. When Chief Minister made a statement on the Nayagarh incident in the Assembly, Opposition members were yet to cool down. They continued to raise slogans as the Chief Minister read out his one-page statement. Addressing a press conference later, leader of opposition summarised the whole incident as “criminal negligence” on part of State Government. “This is third such incident when naxalites laid siege on any town of the State. Our Home Department headed by the Chief Minister himself has failed to gather intelligence inputs. It is beyond comprehension as to how such a large number of extremists could attack on police establishments and that to without much resistance,” the senior Congress leader said.
