Two held for land grabbing

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Central Crime Branch police on Friday arrested two persons on land grabbing charges.

A press release here stated that one of the arrested persons had posed as the owner of a piece of land measuring around 5,000 sq. ft. at Nehru Nagar in Kottivakkam.

The land was in the care of a grocer, Subramanian, a resident of Rangarajapuram in Kodambakkam.

Posing as the owner of the land, Kolli Chetti, who died 15 years ago, the accused prepared a power of attorney with the signature of the deceased. Based on the fake power of attorney, he sold the property worth Rs.1.50 crore. The second accused signed as a witness to the registration of the sale deed.

Arrested

The Kilpauk police arrested a person and remanded him to judicial custody under the Goondas Act for demanding money and assaulting the owner of a medical shop at the junction of Subburayan IV and V Street on January 24.

The accused had also allegedly damaged the shop’s display. On the same day, he had also threatened a grocery shop owner for refusing his demand for free cigarettes.

According to a press release, the accused, V. Prakash, was involved in several burglaries and assault cases in the area.

Confiscated

The Chintadripet police confiscated over two dozen cartons of liquor bottles and a three-wheeler from a shop in the area following information that the shop was bottling and selling imported liquor without permit.

The police seized 25 cartons, each containing 48 bottles of 330 ml of foreign liquor and 1,200 beer bottles from employees of the shop on the Sami Nayakan Street on Friday afternoon. Police said the estimated value of the seized items was Rs.50,000.
