Kochi centre plans new postgraduate diploma programmes

KOCHI: More than 800 students affiliated to the Kochi Regional Centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) received degrees and diplomas at the regional convocation held here as part of the 19th convocation of the university.

Out of 2,212 eligible students of the Kochi Centre, 857 were conferred the degrees and diplomas by Vice-Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai through tele-convocation.

They stood up even as the announcement by Mr. Pillai conferring degrees and diplomas flashed in the big screen installed at the convocation centre.

The main convocation function held at the university headquarters in New Delhi was simultaneously relayed to 30 regional venues, including to Kochi, where the university has regional centres, through teleconferencing mode.

Gold medals

Biju M.K. (PGDOM) and Saurabh Krishna (BTS) from the Kochi Regional Centre received gold medals from Vice- President Hamid Ansari, who was the chief guest at the main convocation function.

P. Chandramohan, Vice-Chancellor of the Kannur University, was the Guest of Honour at the regional convocation held at AJ Hall, Kaloor. M. Shanmugham, Regional Director of the Kochi centre, was also present.

The Kochi centre, having jurisdiction over Kerala and Lakshadweep, has registered a steady growth in terms of total enrolment in the region, with the number touching 11,876 this year, Dr. Shanmugham said in his address.

“There has been a 23 per cent increase in the expansion of the learner support centres across the State compared to the previous year,” he said.

The Kochi Regional Centre had identified and was in the process of developing postgraduate diploma programmes in Teaching and Research in Management, Plantation Management, Pre-School Education, and Media studies as well as diploma in sustainable Farm Management, he said.

IGNOU has conceived a State Open University in Kerala. A committee headed by Surabhi Banerjee, Vice-Chancellor of Netaji Subhas State Open University, Kolkata, has been constituted to do a feasibility study, Dr. Shanmugham said.
