Woman dies, father suspects it to be a dowry death CriMe NOTES

BANGALORE: A 24-year-old housewife died under mysterious circumstances in Kanakapura in Ramanagaram district on Friday. The police arrested the husband and registered a case of dowry death following a complaint by her father.

The deceased is Sheela, wife of Manjunath, who is a senior assistant with the Bescom in Kanakapura. Town police sub-inspector P.K. Raju told The Hindu that the two were married for four years and had a three-year-old daughter.

Sheela’s father Shivalinge Gowda, a resident of Timmegowdana Doddi in Kanakapura taluk, in his complaint to the police alleged that Sheela was beaten to death by Manjunath, his mother Kempamma, sister Savita and brother-in-law Prakash. They were demanding a site in Kanakapura town while Shivalinge Gowda had offered Rs. 2 lakh dowry at the time of the marriage. Mr. Manjunath told the police that he had a quarrel with Sheela on Friday night over the quality of food and had slapped her. Later, he went out to a shop and when he returned, Sheela had consumed poison. Although she was taken to hospital, she died.

Double murder solved

The Kalasipalya police have arrested nine persons in connection with a double murder of a driver and cleaner of a truck carrying coffee beans in Bellur Police Station limits in Mandya district on December 30, 2007.

The police gave the names of the accused as Srinath (32), resident of Vidyanagar, Hassan, Somashekhar (23), Santosh (23), Raghavendra (23) and Devaraja Gowda, all residents of Chikkabasavanahalli, Ajay (21), resident of Dasanakoppalu, Girish (26), resident of Didaga, Mahesh (30), resident of Kowdahalli and Aravind (24), resident of Visveswara Layout, Hassan.

The truck was on its way to Bangalore from Hassan. The accused had allegedly followed the truck and intercepted it near Bellur Cross. Later, the accused reportedly strangled the driver and the cleaner of the truck and burnt their bodies near Mudigere tank. One of the accused, Mahesh, drove the truck and unloaded coffee beans at Kowdahalli. The accused then allegedly pushed the truck to a valley in Charmadi Ghat. The accused, who were armed with lethal weapons, were detained by the Kalasipalya police on charge of attempt to commit dacoity. During interrogation, they spilled the beans about the double murder.

Murder

A 40-year-old woman was found murdered near Byappanahalli Railway Station on Friday night. The police identified the woman as Meena (40), wife of Ravishankar, a taxi driver and resident of Marutisevanagar.

According to the police, the body was found near Marutisevanagar Bridge and local people identified the deceased.
