Consumers complain of inflated power bills
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: Many consumers complained about inflated bills being foisted upon them by the Capital’s private power distribution companies (discoms) at a “lok adalat” organised at the behest of Bharatiya Janata Party national secretary Vijay Goel here on Saturday.
The consumers complained that the discoms were threatening to disconnect power connections if they did not pay the inflated bills and that there was no redress of their complaints. They also complained that the bills were a result of fast-moving meters that have been forcibly installed by the discoms. Social worker and celebrated author Shiv Khera said while the Government and the power companies had failed in their duties, the people were also to blame for their problems. “They often do not protest. There is also a need to educatepeople about their consumer rights so that they are able to register their complaints,” he said.
More lok adalats: Goel
Announcing that more such “lok adalats” would be organised at various places in the Capital, Mr. Goel said while the discoms claim that the complaints of the consumers were being attended regularly, the fact was that the companies were only concerned about their profits.
