Nagercoil: The Government has established a mobile direct purchase centre so that more farmers could sell their produce for a better price, said the Collector-in-charge, B. Jothi Nirmala, here on Friday. Presiding over a farmers’ grievance day meeting, she said that A-grade paddy would be procured by Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation at the rate of Rs. 825 and B-grade for Rs. 795. Farmers in Kanyakumari district have raised paddy crops on 10,076 hectares in the second season and the harvest was over on 500 hectares. Black gram had been raised on 1,569 hectares and other pulses on 192 hectares. The Agriculture Department had fixed a target of distributing 30,000 coconut saplings and distributed 22,500 so far. Steps had been taken to renovate Neyyar main channel. The district administration has prepared a Rs.20-lakh proposal to plug breaches in Sabarai dam. A Rs. 30-lakh proposal had been prepared to renovate three damaged check-dams constructed across Mullaiyaru. The Agriculture Department has asked the Government to allot Rs. 1.35 crore for the renovation of channels of Poigaiaru dam. Works for the construction of Mampazathuraiyaru was going on and would be completed before November, she said. A section of farmers said that officials refused to accept paddy in the mobile direct purchase centre.
