LeT man admits to surveying Mumbai targets: police

Mumbai: At least a dozen sensitive targets here including the State and city police headquarters were surveyed by an alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba operative, who was arrested in Uttar Pradesh last week, possibly to carry out terror strikes, the police said on Saturday.

Fahim Arshad Ansari, who was caught along with seven others,told his interrogators that his handlers asked him to do a recce of possible targets in south Mumbai.

Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare said, “He has admitted to having done a recce of a dozen places” including the Mumbai Police Commissionerate, the State police headquarters, the Haj House, the Haji Ali, the Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway stations, the Gateway of India and the Bombay Stock Exchange building.

Ansari (35) was born and brought up in the city itself. He was drawn into extremism in 2005 following which he went to Dubai for working in a printing press. From Dubai, he went to Pakistan and obtained training at a LeT camp in the jungles surrounding Muzafarrabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

“After motivation levels were assessed, he was taught bomb making, arms handling and intelligence tactics,” Mr. Karkare said. — PTI
