Anand begins with a victory

NEW DELHI: World champion Viswanathan Anand began his title defence in the Morelia-Linares chess tournament at Morelia, Mexico, by inflicting a 30-move defeat on Alexei Shirov on Friday.

In Sicilian Najdorf, Anand played black and came up with a customary rook-sacrifice for a knight after Shirov opted for a queenside castling.

Shirov attacked relentlessly from the kingside while Anand kept his king safely in the centre. Thereafter, Anand turned aggressive and targeted Shirov’s king.

Shirov’s resources were grossly inadequate as Anand’s queen, a rook and a knight captured strategic squares and threatened checkmate.

At this stage, a hapless Shirov gave up.

The first half of the premier double-round robin event will be played in Morelia until February 23.

The results (first round):

Alexei Shirov (Esp) lost to Viswanathan Anand; Veselin Topalov (Bul) bt Levon Aronian (Arm); Peter Leko (Hun) bt Teimour Radjabov (Aze); Magnus Carlsen (Nor) drew with Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr).

Second round pairings: Anand-Aronian; Radjabov-Topalov; Ivanchuk-Leko; Shivov-Carslen.
