SCHOOL NOTES

Seminar held

Vidyatmika Public School, Perumanna, organised a seminar on parental re-education and interventions regarding poor school performance in children and on psycho-social well-being of schoolchildren on Saturday. The resource persons included Mohan Sundaram, consultant psychiatrist with Manohar Hospital.

The talks dwelled on welfare of schoolchildren with emphasis on being psychologically healthy and socially adaptive to society. School students too, like others, were prone to stress but of different kind.

These types of stresses arise from the pressure from school and home to perform well, peer pressure to comply with group dynamics, exposure to new ideas propagated by the media and, finally, novel exposure and experiences arising from their own changing hormones. These stresses can also manifest as learning disabilities, emotional and behavioural disorders and poor scholastic performance. Thus, it becomes imperative that the problems faced by school-going children should be identified and managed at the earliest.

Apart from these developmental disorders, specific learning disability in childhood for example, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and psychiatric disorders like childhood depression interfere in the scholastic performance of the child. In these cases, an attempt should be made to highlight this crisis.
