Freebies continue: Beneficiaries with the free colour TVs distributed in Salem on Sunday. — SALEM: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has been fulfilling all promises that were given to the people at the time of elections, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam has said. Distributing colour television sets and gas stoves to beneficiaries here on Sunday, the Minister said that from the fourth month of the DMK regime, colour TVs were being distributed to beneficiaries. Under the first phase, 25 lakh TVs worth Rs. 750 crore were distributed while under the second phase, 30 lakh TVs were distributed at a cost of Rs. 750 crore. Presently, under the third phase, 34.25 lakh TVs would be distributed at a cost of Rs 750 crore, he said. The Minister further pointed out that Salem district had so far received 1.37 lakh TVs and of which 1.19 had already been distributed to the beneficiaries. He asked the officials not to wait for the Ministers and peoples representatives to distribute the same. The district had received 14,921 gas stoves with connections for 2007-08 and all of them had been given to the beneficiaries. The Government had sanctioned a sum of Rs. 103 crore this year to distribute 5.83 lakh gas stoves and connections, the Minister added. Mr. Arumugam said that since both State and Central Governments had been functioning in an amicable manner, such welfare schemes could be carried out to the people of State, which spent nearly Rs. 37,000 crore. The schemes, he said included eggs thrice a week, allowances for unemployed educated youth, assistances for women etc. He said that 12,731 had received pattas under the free land distribution scheme in Salem district. Salem city and its district would witness to a flurry of development activities such as underground drainage scheme, dedicated water supply scheme for Salem city and other welfare projects. Those who participated included Salem MP K. V. Thankgabalu, Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini, MLAs A. Raja (Veerapandi), R. Rajendiran (Panamarathupatti), District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam, Corporation Commissioner M. Jayaraman and RDO Kaja Mohaideen. Collector N. Mathivanan presided.
