Inter-caste marriages among Backward Class groups favoured

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Former Union Minister P. Shiv Shanker favoured inter-caste marriages between Backward Class groups to promote their unity.

At a seminar organised by AP Backward Classes Sangham here on Sunday, Mr. Shiv Shanker deplored the lack of unity among BCs who constituted 52 per cent of the population. Appealing to the BCs to grow into a political force, he asked them not to get exploited by the Telugu Desam and Congress which might dole out several concessions in a bid to woo them. A large chunk of Congress leadership was not committed to the welfare of BCs, he added.

Former MP K.E. Krishnamurthy said the BCs were earlier confined to serving the upper castes. But they were now demanding political empowerment from the upper castes. Stating that the upper castes had changed their strategy of appeasing BCs, he said the days when the former used to donate to them goats and cows were over.
