dated February 18, 1958: Railway Budget

The Railway Minister, Mr. Jagjivan Ram, presenting the Railway Budget for 1958-59, on February 17, announced no changes in the existing rates structure. He said, however, that the examination of the Railway Rates Structure Committee’s recommendations was now in the final stages and decisions thereon were expected to be taken and implemented in the near future. The revised estimate of the net surplus for 1957-58 was only Rs.21.66 crores against the Budget estimate of Rs.30.83 crores. The Budget for 1958-59 anticipated a net surplus of Rs.27.34 crores. Mr. Jagjivan Ram expected the gross traffic receipts to jump from Rs.384.40 crores (revised estimate for 1957-58) to Rs.407.48 crores in 1958-59. Operational efficiency during the current year, he claimed, had touched “new high levels."
