GLIMPSE: Children get a feel of the intricacies involved in Yakshagana make-up.
BANGALORE: As scholar on Taala Maddale and Yakshagana, Martha Ashton put it, Yakshagana has an “appeal that is hard to erase from the mind for a long time.”
The charm of a Yakshagana performance comes not just from energetic performances, but also from the elaborate costumes and the colourful make-up. It takes an artiste hours to put on the make-up. People such as Bannada Malinga were famous for their skills in make-up.
A five-day workshop started in Bangalore on Saturday by the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Saraswathi Vidyamandira, titled “Veshabhushana,” is giving young students a glimpse of the intricacies involved in Yakshagana make-up. Resource persons such as Radhakrishna Urala, Sudarshana Urala, Chidananda Kulakarni Krishnamurthy Thunga and Udaya Bovi are teaching young boys and girls Yakshagana make-up.
They are being trained in mixing of colours, their application, the use of different hues for different characters and the art of wearing costumes.
About 50 students from different schools and localities of Bangalore are attending the workshop.
