Swamy’s appeal to Centre

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy has urged the Central Government to hold discussions with the Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha , the apex Hindu body of sadhus, convened by Swami Dayananda Sarasvati to substantially amend the Hindu Religious Endowments and Charitable Trust Act (1951) to bring it in conformity with Article 25 and 26 of the Constitution.

In a statement here, Dr. Swamy said at present the Act provided for total control of Hindu temples by the Government at the Centre and States, exempting mosques and churches.

“Highly discriminatory”

This is “highly discriminatory” against Hindus who constituted nearly 83 per cent of the population, the statement added.
