Sonepat: Police on Sunday claimed to have busted an inter-state cattle smuggling racket with the arrest of a person. The racket was busted with the arrest of Mayur Ali, a resident of Birori village under the Loni police station, on the G.T. Road after an exchange of gunfire, Senior Superintendent of Police Navdeep Singh Virk said here. The SSP said a patrolling party spotted a mini-truck loaded with cows in the district and ordered it to stop, but the driver speeded away with the police giving chase. He later stopped the vehicle and the occupants fled. The police recovered a mobile phone from the vehicle and a call was received on it asking the smugglers to flee towards Indrauli village, the official said. The police immediately set up a checkpoint near the railway crossing, where a car arrived and the occupants returned. Police then chased them but they fled firing shots. Ali was injured in return fire and overpowered by the police. He was immediately hospitalised. — PTI
