Issues such as examining the newborn, handling it immediately after birth, monitoring vital signs were discussed PUDUCHERRY: A continuing medical education (CME) programme for the staff nurses was held at the Indira Gandhi Government Hospital and Postgraduate Institute on Sunday. Chief Medical Officer of the IGGH and PGI R.Murali gave a presentation on clinical screening of the newborn, covering issues such as examining a newborn baby, handling it immediately after birth, monitoring vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature and performing a thorough examination of the baby from head to foot. Detecting life threatening congenital anomalies and birth defects, recognising birth injuries, identifying dangerous signs such as cyanosis, convulsions, difficulties in breathing, regurgitation of feeds and vomiting were discussed during the CME programme. The need for clearing doubts in the mind of the mother regarding the baby’s health was also stressed. Among others Project Director H.Ranganath, Nursing Superintendent Kasthuri Purushothaman and course coordinator T.Vasugi spoke.
