Puducherry: The Public Works Department will construct a main pipeline to provide drinking water and connections to houses in Krishna Nagar and its surrounding areas at the cost of Rs 2.23 crore. Minister of Transport and Education M.O.H.F. Shahjahan inaugurated the works on Friday. According to official sources, the works would be completed within a year. Over 12,000 metres of pipeline would be laid for the project. Areas such as Krishna Nagar, Ezhil Nagar, Suryagandhi Nagar, Vasantha Nagar and Senthamarai Nagar would benefit from the project. Earlier, an overhead tank with a capacity of 20 lakh litres and a sump with a capacity of 5.5 lakh litres were constructed for supplying drinking water to Krishna Nagar and its surrounding areas. The works were completed at the cost of Rs 1.72 crore. Under the project, three 50-horse-power-motors were installed at the overhead tank. At present, drinking water for areas in Krishna Nagar was temporarily supplied from a well on the 9th and 12th Cross Streets here. A 25-horse-power submersible pump had been installed.
