ARIYALUR: For 200 students of Meenakshi Ramasami College tucked in Thathanur, a nondescript village near Jayamkondam in Ariyalur district, ‘earning for learning’ has become a reality.

Courtesy the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) that provides for 100 man days of work for an individual a year with Rs. 80 as daily earnings.

The students have grabbed the opportunity to earn by taking part in rural development works during week-ends and vacation under the scheme.

This has not only obviated the need to depend on their parents for meeting their educational expenses, but also improved their self-esteem.

The suggestion of enlisting students in the most ambitious rural development programme till date made by District Collector Xavier Chriso Nayagam was readily accepted by the college Correspondent M.R. Raghunathan and Principal R. Rajamanickam.

The college authorities, in fact, went the extra yard by distributing T-shirts with inscriptions of heritage symbols along with the name of the programme.

Motivating the students along with Pasu C. Samidurai, president of Thathanur village panchayat, the Collector said their participation in the programme would make them to identify themselves with the country’s march towards nine per cent growth rate even while inculcating a mentality to take up any kind of work in future without any hesitation.

“Any kind of work has dignity attached to it,” he said exuding confidence that the students would have a bright future as responsible citizens.
