Letters to the Editor
This refers to the news report, ‘Right to Education Bill soon’ (Feb. 16). It has been said that the government is planning to increase the number of universities, colleges, and schools but an increase in their number alone is not enough. The quality of education in schools and colleges should change. We are producing rote machines by stressing on examinations and marks; we are killing the students’ natural abilities to think and invent. No student, up to Class X, should be failed; the focus should be on giving a set of skills, which will be useful to him for pursuing a small business, trade or a vocation. Rote learning of the several details of history, geography and other subjects is of no use. Vocational skills should be taught in coordination with the local industry and experts in technology. K. Rajagopal, Visakhapatnam
