Of nostalgia and the road ahead…

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The former chairperson of the Oil and Natural Gas Commission Subir Raha could not resist the temptation of meeting his friends from his days in college, Kolkata’s Jadavpur University, after watching a presentation that gave glimpses of the campus, one of the oldest in the country.

“Many roads led to this building!” he said, looking nostalgically at a picture of the women’s hostel.

Many eminent people like Mr. Raha were part of the third reunion of the Alumni Association of the University’s Bangalore Chapter held here on Saturday.

“This is the time to remember all those good lecturers and lab technicians who gave extra attendance that helped secure the degree,” he said, with a mischievous glint in his eyes. The other alumni who were present included the Principal Secretary (Planning) Lakshmi Venkatachalam; Director (Strategy), IBM, Inder Thukral and Shukla Bose, Parikrama founder.

The theme for the reunion this time was “Think Big”. Fishing out a note from his pocket to speak on the subject, Mr. Raha said: “I am just taking out this chota. This is very important on some occasions in the college, it has all the points. You know when it was being used!” he joked.

“Many people become big, but are not remembered. Those who are remembered are the ones who are different,” Mr. Raha said. Being different would mean taking risks which are unknown, he said. “You are risking your comforts and also your reputation as you are moving away from the beaten track,” he said.
