Global shopping fete to be held in State

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to promote rural tourism, an international shopping festival would soon be held here, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni said today.

In view of presence of several rural areas near the city with huge potential for arts and crafts, Bhubaneswar has been chosen as one of the names for holding such festival, she said while inaugurating the Toshali national crafts mela here.

A rural tourism project in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme and Intach has been launched for promoting arts and craft events in 36 places across the country, Soni said.

The fortnight long festival consisted of seven important events including Mukteswar dance festival, Ekamra-international food festival, Kalinga mahotsav, Rajarani music festival, Ekamra shopping festival and mini marathon by Orissa Mining Corporation.

Claimed to be an occasion for the people of Orissa and domestic and international tourists to experience the excellent performance of artists of international repute, the festival has generated much interest among the art loving people in the State.

Noted Kuchupudi danseuse Swapnasundari, singer Hariharan and Odissi danseuse Aruna Mohanty will perform at the festival. - PTI
