K. Govinda Pillai dead

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: CPI leader K. Govinda Pillai, 83, who died here on Sunday, was a highly respected Communist leader who made his mark with selfless and committed public service.

He was one of the few remaining leaders belonging to the pre-split united Communist Party era. His contribution to the Communist Party of India in the Travancore-Cochin region, particularly in Thiruvananthapuram district, would always be remembered.

He entered politics through the student movement and went on to serve as private secretary to Joseph Mundassery, who was Education Minister in the first Communist ministry. He also served as vice-president of the World Democratic Youth Federation for a long time.

He is survived by his son K.G. Mohanan (Kuwait) and daughter K.G. Thara, a faculty at the Disaster Management Institute here.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan condoled the death of K. Govinda Pillai.
