Thiruvananthapuram: Five leading personalities have in a statement here urged the United Democratic Front to abandon its proposed February 19 hartal and set an example by adopting different agitation methods that will not put the man in the streets to hardship. In a statement here, V.R. Krishna Iyer, Sukumar Azhikode, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, O.N.V. Kurup and B.R.P. Bhaskar said that the issues raised by the UDF were indeed serious. Neither the UDF nor the LDF could blame each other for this complicated issue. They urged the government to take urgent steps to solve the rise in prices of essential commodities by taking the Opposition parties into confidence. — Special Correspondent
