State panel sought to help disabled
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: The Regional Adviser and former member of National Commission for Persons with Disabilities Indumathi Rao has suggested the constitution of a State Commission for protection of rights of persons with disabilities.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Ms. Rao said that the disabled in India were neglected and they found it difficult to pursue their education and find jobs.
She urged the political parties to ensure their commitment towards them and said at least three per cent of the total budget of all departments should be allocated for their development.
Reservation
Rehabilitation services of people with disabilities should not be restricted to urban areas alone, but also district, taluk and village levels. Reservation for jobs for disabled persons should be extended to private and corporate bodies as in the government institutions, she said. She urged the political parties to commit themselves for the welfare of people with disabilities. She asked the people to support the parties that have a cohesive policy towards rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.
