It was flagged off by former athlete Vandana Rao Manipal: A large number of people participated in the “Udupi Marathon 2008,” organised by the Udupi District Athletic Association and sponsored by Manipal University, here on Sunday. The theme of the marathon was “Run for education through health.” Vandana Rao, former athlete, flagged off the marathon. Film actor Sanjana and chairperson of Hostel Advisory Committee of Manipal University, Vasanthi Pai were present. The participants had to run 21.5 km in the marathon that ended at KMC Greens. Besides the marathon, there were 5 km races for girls and boys under 16 years and for men and women above 50 years. Chairman of the Third Finance Commission A.G. Kodgi ran the entire 5 km. V.S. Acharya, MLC, and the former MLA K. Raghupati Bhat covered some distance. In the above 50-years men’s 5 km race, the first six places went to B. Kaladharan, K. Ramakrishna, K.L. Patil, Mohan P. Netrakar, Jayakrishna Hegde and Basavaraj Bijjargi, and in the women’s section, it was K. Arunakala, Sarojini P. Anchan, Mary Minan, R. Kasturi, Veena Kudva and Chandrakala Rao. The prizes were given away by president of Manipal University Ramdas Pai, Pro-Chancellor H.S. Ballal and Vice-Chancellor Rajasekharan Warrier.
