MANGALORE: The panel discussion “Last word”, organised on the last day of “Engineer 2008,” the four-day national-level technical symposium, raked up the question: “Is the social responsibility an opportunity to do the right thing or an obligation doctored by the State?” The discussion did not achieve what it set out to do, to provide the “last word” on the issue. A fractured verdict emerged from it because of the choice of panellists who came from completely diverse backgrounds. The Government was represented by Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Human Resource Development Subhash Kuntia. He fired the opening salvo by saying that a lot of social initiatives of corporate organisations tended to be superficial. “Pharmaceutical companies should try and support health-based initiatives and information technology companies should probably get into the education sector,” he said. Rajendra Mishra, a finalist of the “Lead India” campaign, said: “If the Government did its job, there would be no need for corporations to embark on social projects. Companies exist to make profits.”
