TNEB response

In response to my letter published in these columns (February 4), the TNEB has provided meter cards to its customers. I wish to thank the TNEB in this regard.

Increase medical aid

Under the Medical Insurance Scheme for pensioners, the Tamil Nadu Government reimburses upto 75 per cent of the expenses (subject to a maximum of Rs. 50,000) incurred for treatment of certain diseases or surgeries, the pensioner contributes Rs.10 per month. This was fixed about 10 years ago and the medical expenses have increased abnormally. Hence the Government may increase the assistance to Rs. 1,00,000. If necessary, the contribution may also be increased.

Online encumbrance certificate

We find it difficult to register online for encumbrance certificates, particularly we find it hard to select the village in which the land is situated.

I request the Government to set it right.

Public nuisance

We, residents of Thiruveedhi Amman Koil Street, Mylapore, (Corporation Zone-6, Division-96), hereby express our civic woes.

While efforts are made by the Chennai Corporation to make the city clean, neat, and dust- and pollution-free to achieve the long-cherished objective of “Singara Chennai”, we have all sorts of health hazards on our street.

The slum-dwellers in and around the area throw rubbish and trash all over the place. The cattle- and chicken-rearing is not properly done. They are allowed to go scot-free all over and have no place earmarked with the result that they cause harmful to everyone, especially children and old people.

Almost the whole street has been converted into a “den” with individual huts set up for cattle. Recently, when someone on our street was in a serious condition, we could not bring an autorickshaw to rush him to hospital and as a result, he died.

There are three Corporation water pumps on our street and water overflows after 10 p.m., flooding the entire place. There are fast food vendors on the street, encroaching upon the path and creating an unhygienic atmosphere.

We request the authorities concerned to take appropriate and immediate action.

Resume bus route

The bus route No. 3A was plying between Mylapore and Parrys Corner. It was catering to the needs of office-goers from Mylapore, Alwarpet and Gopalapuram to reach Parrys Corner. For some reasons, the route was completely dropped. This has caused hardship and inconvenience to regular commuters. The Transport Corporation can consider the re-introduction of the route 3A, at least, during rush hour.

Unclean surroundings

We, students from the Department of Social work, Stella Maris College, have been placed for field work through Janodayam Social Education Centre at Jyothiammal Nagar in Saidapet from August 2007. We have been working with children, women, youth and community leaders. While working with children in the Balwadies of Jyothiammal Nagar and Chettithottam (near the slaughter house, Alandur), we came across a critical health problem faced by the children. We have found that the surroundings of the Balwadies have been polluted by human excreta. This pollution of the environment around the Balwadies has affected children’s health. The children cannot withstand the bad smell and that causes vomiting and diahorrea among the children.

Hence, we request the officials to take necessary action so as to benefit the children of the Balwadies.

New helpline for train passengers

It is, indeed, heartening to read the news item that a 47-year-old man, travelling in a train, was saved when he had chest pain, with the help of a co-passenger who immediately contacted the helpline 9962500500.

Duty doctor was arranged immediately in the next station and the patient continued his journey, after the medical help.

It would be a great boon to travellers, if the emergency number is displayed distinctively in every compartment.

Non-supply of essentials

I am a family card-holder attached to the TNCSC Shop on Brindavan Street, West Mambalam (Code No. HA-006). Whenever I approach the shop for buying commodities such as toor dal, udad dal etc., I get a standard reply, ‘no stock,’ from the salesman. In the last six months, I got just 1 kg. of udad dal, that too, once. When I enquired about the non-availability of these items every month, I was informed by the person in charge that the shop got 100 kg. each of toor dal and udad dal every month, whereas 1000 family cards are attached to this shop.

As a result, these items are supplied to 100 card-holders only at the rate of 1 kg. a card on the first-come-first-served basis.

Naturally, the rest (nearly 900) have to go with empty bag every month.

It is pertinent to mention here that a majority of card-holders hail from poor and middle class families.

Hence, if the Government is really interested in ameliorating the lot of the poor, it should supply them these commodities at affordable prices.

Non-receipt of deposit repayment instalment

In response to the new item about disbursement of 3 per cent of the deposit amount to depositors in RBF Ltd., which appeared in The Hindu dated 25. 12. 2007, my wife and myself notified the Official Liquidator (Kuralagam) for RBF Ltd., with a copy to M/s. RBF Ltd., Royapettah, about our change of residential address from Kolkata to Srirangam and requested them to send the 6th instalment repayment cheque to our present residential address at Srirangam.

Fortunately my wife Mrs. Vijayalakshmi has got the repayment cheque for Rs.1,790 against her deposits. But till date no cheque has been sent to me by the RBF against my deposits. I have already written quite a number of letters to the OL and M/s. RBF Ltd., Royapettah.

Even I tried to call the RBF Office over phone (044-28481180, 28486187) but there was no response to my calls.

For the past 15 to 20 days, I have been running from pillar to post to get the 6th instalment cheque, but in vain.I do not know whom I should approach to get my grievance addressed.

Encroachments

The entire stretch of platform has been occupied by vendors, causing traffic problems on Cathedral Garden Road, opposite DBS Centre. I request the Corporation to take action immediately.

Delay in train arrival

I am a regular commuter from Tiruvallur to Chennai, starting my travel by 9.20 a.m.

The train, which originates from Tiruvallur, halts at limited stops en route to Chennai. In the last seven months, it has never started at the scheduled time and, consequently never reached Chennai Central on time.

The late running of this train has caused a lot of difficulties to all commuters most of whom are State or Central Government employees.

Hence, I request the authorities concerned to convert the 9.05 a.m. train into a fast train with limited halts, which will be of immense use to the commuters and the general public as well.
