K. Manikandan
They are among some more town panchayats of Kancheepuram district to be selected under a scheme
TAMBARAM: Three town panchayats near Tambaram, Chitlapakkam, Peerkankaranai and Tiruneermalai, have been selected for a Rs. 1.5-crore package to carry out some development works under the Anaithu Perooratchi Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (APAMT).
They are among some more town panchayats of Kancheepuram district to be selected under the scheme. Town panchayat officials told The Hindu that works under several classifications could be taken up.
Improvements
They include roads, improvements to burial grounds, developing parks, building of community halls, providing stormwater drains, centre medians on important roads, installation of fluorescent street lamps and improving market areas. Within the allotted Rs. 50 lakh for each of the town panchayats, authorities had to prioritise the works.
Either new facilities could be created or existing ones needing improvement could be chosen, officials said.
Financially weak
While acknowledging that the allotted sum was not high, officials said that most town panchayats were financially weak and hoped the amount through the scheme would be able to give a little facelift to the respective towns.
