Jayakanthan among nine honoured
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The 12th Annual Centenarian Trust Awards were conferred upon nine eminent personalities at a function organised by the Centenarian Trust here on Sunday.
The Centenarian Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on Tamil litterateur D. Jayakanthan. Seva Rathna Awards were given to folk artist Subbu Arumugam and seven others.
Giving away the awards, S. Jagadeesan, chairman, Intellectual Property Appellate Board, said the lifetime achievement award was not an end; it signalled a new beginning for the awardees. This recognition would rejuvenate their service to society.
He also expressed displeasure over the demand for reserving posts in the judiciary for a particular community, and with regard to behaviour of boy students. “What kind of inducement or incentive can be given to get them behaved in a proper way?” he asked.
After unveiling the portrait of trust founder K. Venkatasubramanian, G. Viswanathan, Chancellor, Vellore Institute of Technology University, said that due to commercialisation and corruption, the cost of education in India was higher. He urged the Centre and State Governments to bring down the cost so that higher education was available to all.
